ROCKCLIFFE CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

British Values

As a school, we continue to promote the “British Values” of Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty and Tolerance. These values are highlighted in our new hall displays which have been created by each class.

How does RE contribute to pupils’ capacity to explore of British Values?

We enable pupils to learn to think for themselves about British values.  We offer opportunities to build an accurate knowledge base about religious and human values, as well as hone interpersonal skills in classroom discussions.

Class 1: Matthew 22:37-40
One of the Pharisees tested Jesus with a question, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” (Matthew 22:36)
Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it:
“Love your neighbour as yourself.”
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments”
(Matthew 22:37-40)

Class 2- A recipe for friendship (Mutual Respect) Exploring diverse faiths and worldviews in RE lessons requires a positive attitude towards diversity. The positive space which is created offers pupils the opportunity to practice listening, learning and thinking about others in a respectful environment.

Class 3-School Rules
(The rule of law, linked to our Christian Values)

In RE, pupils examine different examples of codes for human life, including commandments, rules or precepts offered by different religious communities.

Class 4- The Rule of Law

Children can compare our public laws to religious laws and explore examples of when the two collide.   Children can consider the value of the rule of law, where all people are equal before the law.

Class 5- Mutual Tolerance

We do not accept intolerant attitudes to members of the community. A baseline for a fair community is that each person’s right to ‘be themselves’ is accepted by all. RE can challenge children and young people to be increasingly respectful and to celebrate diversity.

Class 6- Individual Liberty

In RE, pupils consider questions about identity and belonging.. Pupils could begin to understand themselves as situated in a particular cultural context by considering the cultural norms, rules, desires and pressures which restrain them, but also the ways they are free. Religion is a good case study of the balance between freedom and restraint.
