Earthquake Proof Structures

As part of our work on earthquakes we looked at the devastating effects caused by these. This is real issue in Japan where earthquakes are extremely common. Using Google Earth we were able to visit and explore Japan from the comfort of our classroom. We all noted how built-up parts of the country were, making links with London and New York.

This is a real issue for engineers in Japan as they have to build skyscrapers that will be earthquake proof in order to reduce damages and cost.

We tried to make our own earthquake proof structures using spaghetti and marshmallows on a bed of jelly. We definately enjoyed shaking our jelly trays best in order to determine just how successful we had been in making our structures earthquake proof.
