ROCKCLIFFE CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Spring Term 2015

Our topic for the Spring term is a Geography based unit called, Natural disasters! Children will be learning about a range of different natural disasters including a study on volcanos and a local study of the Carlisle floods. We will be exploring why and where such disasters occur considering case studies from around the world.

Our volcanos study will link in with our Science work this term on rocks. We will be exploring the different types of rocks and how these are formed.

In English we will be focusing on a range of non-fiction text types including non-chronological reports and explanation texts. We will be compiling these to create our very own information leaflets. Later on in the term we will also be using tornados and volcanos as a stimulus for a poetry unit focusing on descriptive language and vocabulary.

In Maths, we will be focusing on using scales to interpret data recorded from disasters across the world and measuring the depths of flooding levels  in order to compare this with those recorded in Carlisle.

Finally, in Art we are going to be using lava as our stimulus. We will be developing painting skills through mixing and creating different shades and tones. We will be focusing upon controlling our paintbrush in order to create a volcano inspired masterpiece at the end of our unit.
