ROCKCLIFFE CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Viking Invasion!

On Thursday 21st May Class 4 experienced its first ever Viking invasion!

Hrothgar the Viking attacked our classroom before recruiting children to join his Viking war band. Outside of Hrothgar’s camp we learnt all about the weapons of a warrior, from axes to javelins, and had lots of fun finding out some gruesome deaths of some particularly unlucky Vikings.

Next, we learnt all about fires before taking part in a story about the Viking Gods. We all had a fantastic time dressing up in order to act out the story of how Freya became the goddess of battle – there’s definitely some budding actors in Class 4!

We finished off the morning with a quick blow on some Viking horns (much trickier than it looks) and taking a look at the animal furs in Hrothgar’s camp. Finally, it was time for lunch – being a Viking is hungry work!

After lunch, we got to play the Viking game of hnefatafl against Hrothgar, this was incredible fun, although unfortunately we lost both times.

We concluded the day by holding our very own Viking funeral. Adam the brave warrior was sent to Asgard along with his slave girl Libby. We found it really interesting to learn all about what was sent to Asgard with the fallen warrior and of course discovering how and why slaves would be sacrificed.

We had a hugely enjoyable day, definitely one that we won’t be forgetting in a hurry! All the children looked fantastic and many thanks to everybody who spent time making and organising costumes.

Take a look at the pictures of our action packed day below.
