Summer 2024

Summer title.jpeg

Welcome back to the Summer Term where we hope for lots of sunshine to explore our Seaside topic.  We will learn about the geographical features of the seaside, both human and physical. Children will learn about seaside environments; finding out where they are located in the United Kingdom and seaside resorts nearest our
own locality using maps, aerial photograph, webcams and developing their key vocabulary. We will also learn about the similarities
and differences between seaside resorts and our own locality, looking at how resorts have changed over time.

In English, we will be using 'Hello Lighthouse' by Sophie Blackall which follows the story of a lighthouse keeper who lives on a secluded island. We watch as he leaves for his first trip out to relieve the previous keeper and as he adjusts to his new life. He keeps busy with daily chores like trimming the wick and refilling the oil for the lighthouse beacon.
Our VIPERS text will be 'The Puffin Keeper' Michael Morpurgo.  This is a story of a life-changing friendship, a lost puffin, and a lonely artist. It's the story of an entire lifetime, and how one event can change a life forever. From masterful storyteller, Michael Morpurgo, and world-class illustrator, Benji Davies, comes a magical new story.

Computing
With Miss Bingham, we have started a new unit using Scratch Junior to create andd program different things.  This week, we looked at how we can add backgrounds
to our program and how the sprite can be changed.  We made a car move across the city and we also made some people dance on stage!

Music
We started to learn the song, 'He's got the whole world in his hands'.  We started off by warming up our voices and moving around to the pulse before putting actions to the words and practising verse by verse.

Geography
Children brought in some photos of them enjoying the seaside.  We used atlases to try and find the locations.  We found some beautiful seaside locations all around the world.

English
We are continuing to build our English work around 'Hello Lighthouse' with lots of opportunities for develop vocabulary. We have covered expanded noun phrases, prepositions and personification.  The children have been incredibly enthusiastic about this wonderful book. Children produced some fabulous informal letters as a 'message in a bottle'.
