In our school, spirituality is fostered through various means, including collective worship, religious education, and by fostering a sense of wonder and awe in the world around children. We believe that Spirituality is about helping children develop their own beliefs and values, as well as understanding and respecting the beliefs and values of others.
1. Collective Worship:
Collective worship provides a structured opportunity for children to reflect on their own beliefs, values, and experiences, as well as learn about the beliefs and practices of others.
It can involve prayer, singing, reflection, and discussions about relevant themes.
2. Religious Education (RE):
RE can play a key role in exploring the non-material aspects of life, including questions about meaning and purpose, beliefs about God or higher powers, and issues of right and wrong.
RE lessons can challenge children to think critically about their own beliefs and the beliefs of others, and help them develop a broader worldview.
3. Fostering Awe and Wonder:
Encouraging children to ask questions about the world around them, including nature, science, and human achievements, can spark a sense of awe and wonder.
This can involve exploring beauty, mystery, and the intangible aspects of life.
4. Developing a Sense of Community:
Creating a school environment where children feel valued, respected, and connected to one another can foster a sense of belonging and community.
This can involve encouraging empathy, compassion, and understanding between children of different backgrounds and beliefs.
5. Reflection and Self-Awareness:
Providing opportunities for children to reflect on their own experiences and feelings, and to learn from their reflections, can help them develop self-awareness and a greater understanding of themselves and others.
This can involve encouraging children to talk about their feelings, share their experiences, and engage in creative or expressive activities.
6. Respect for Others:
Promoting respect for different faiths, feelings, and values is an important aspect of spiritual development.
This can involve learning about different religions and cultures, and engaging in respectful dialogue with others.
Our school entrance has been transformed with this wonderful display by our incredibly creative Mrs Parker. We are using the metaphor of 'Mirrors, Windows and Doors' to develop Spirituality in our school.
Windows
Opportunities for children to be aware of the world in new ways, looking out into the world
To wonder about life's WOWs- things that are amazing
To think about life's OWs that take us by surprise
Learning about life in all its fullness
Mirrors
Opportunities to reflect on their experiences
Looking inside yourself
Consider life's big questions and reach some possible answers
Learning from life by exploring our own insights and those of others.
Doors
Opportunities for children to respond
Moving onto a new path or situation
To do something creative to develop and apply our ideas
Learning to live out our beliefs and values
